A Clockwork Orange

Opening lines-

“There was me, that is Alex, and my three droogs, that is Pete, Georgie, and Dim, and we sat in the Korova Milkbar trying to make up our rassoodocks what to do with the evening. The Korova milkbar sold milk-plus, milk plus vellocet or synthemesc or drencrom, which is what we were drinking. This would sharpen you up and make you ready for a bit of the old ultra-violence.”

“A Clockwork Orange” is a once in a lifetime movie. Based on a book of the same name, its based on a futuristic, lawless England, where gangs of young men go around spreading havoc. The narrator Alex De Large is the leader of one such group. His passions include ultra violence, sex and Beethoven. But crime ofcourse never pays, and he has to suffer for his misdeeds, even when he’s apparently become a better man after being jailed.
An interesting question is put up towards the end of the film. Can crime be stopped involuntarily, without reforming a person? To stifle a man’s thoughts and actions, just to make him acceptable to the society, isn’t that a crime itself? Humans are ofcourse humans, and not clockwork.

And oh my brothers! I cannot tell thee more. You shall have to watch it with your own two eyes. Yes my brothers?

The second episode in Madhur Bhandarkar’s trilogy revealing the darker side of India’s corporate world.
After the exposé on Mumbai’s “Page 3” society in a film of the same name,
this one veers into the world of business barons and boardroom battles.
The movie is based on the philosophy that in business, the ultimate goal is profit. And it does not matter if ethics are completely bypassed to achieve it.
People who’ve seen Page 3 will identify Bhandarkar’s signature style, especially the boldness with which he blows the cover off the perverse lifestyles of the rich and powerful. Sleaze is ofcourse there in ample helpings. There are also the “aside” acts involving the lower rung characters where they make fun of their bosses, as in Page 3.
Worth a watch.
